On 29 June through 2 July 2023 XLVI the Republic of Molossia was honored to participate in the fifth major intermicronational get-together and conference, MicroCon 2023. Hosted this year by the Royal Republic of Ladonia, MicroCon is a meet-up of micronationalists from around the world. The entire event was held in Joliet, Illinois. On the evening of 29 June a micronational trivia contest was held in the hosting hotel restaurant, which the Molossian delegation won in the face of stiff competition. The following day many micronations participated in the Nemean Games, a micronational Olympics, on a playing field near the Ladonian Embassy. The struggle was mighty against strong opposition but Molossia again prevailed, taking first in the shot-put (tennis ball) and 50 meter dash, and third place in the discus (Frisbee). That evening many micronationalists gathered for a diplomatic reception the Ladonian Embassy, hosted by Queen Carolyn of Ladonia. This allowed the leaders of the assembled nations to gather socially, exchange ideas and generally get to know each other. Most micronationalists come from locales far from each other and the opportunity to meet and greet was a welcome one.
The conference proper began the following day at the Joliet Holiday Inn, and from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM delegates from over 41 micronations gathered to share their ideas, dreams and worlds with each other. Throughout the day presentations were given on a wide variety of micronational topics, ranging from cyber security, conlangs, a micronational rescue mission, how one of our citizens became involved in micronations and much more. Introductions to many newer micronations, such as Maristan, Hankland, Curnon and many more were also made. Breaks were taken, including lunch, to allow time for networking and socializing - and there many photo-ops in front of each nation's information display. The media was also in attendance, of course. Following the presentations awards were given out, with His Excellency President Kevin Baugh giving out 17 Molossian Medals of Statesmanship to most of the newer micronations in attendance. After an all-too-brief seven hours the conference adjourned and the delegates departed to prepare for the evening's event, the MicroCon Gala.
The MicroCon Gala was a semi-formal ball, arranged as a soirée following the convention. Attendees arrived in the hotel conference room-turned-ballroom at 7:00 PM, dressed in their finery for an evening of dining and hobnobbing. After a magnificent dinner, dancing and socializing continued afterward until the evening wound down and each leader and their party took their leave. Thus ended this year's MicroCon Joliet event; a second MicroCon 2023 will take place in August in Ypres, Belgium, the first such in Europe. This promises to be an exciting event as well! After this year, the next MicroCon is planned for Montreal in 2025. Until then, MicroCon 2023 was an amazing event and one of memories and experiences that will last for a very long time!
